(Generally an AVMA approved school) or complete a program or curriculum that has been deemed equivalent to a two-year approved program by the VMB.

Licensed, certified or registered as an RVT in another state (or in Canada) and have taken an examination determined by the VMB to be equivalent to the California RVT examination and have at least 4416 hours of directed clinical practice in no less than 24 months under the direct supervision of a licensed veterinarian.

Alternate Route Programs

Alternate Route FAQs
Are you a California RVT who qualified via the Alternate Route or Limited Term Eligibility Window who now wants to take the VTNE so you can work in another state?

The Veterinary Medical Board suggests that you contact them at Licensing.VMB@dca.ca.gov to allow them to review your license status and help expedite your approval with the AAVSB to take the VTNE.

As a reminder, if you passed the old California RVT Exam and are currently licensed, you do not need to take the VTNE or the current CA RVT Exam to maintain your license.
